The White Mask Project
Description:
The project consisted of 12 women and 12 men who represented a diverse background. Their role in this project was to write slurs that were connected to identities that they represent on a white mask and then wear the white mask. The models were asked to wear black to contrast the color of the masks. The masks were uncomfortable, small, and covered their true identity. The models complained of the size the masks and how it repressed them from moving freely and even blinking. They found it easier to close their eyes. However, once they removed the masks, they felt free. They were noticeably more comfortable.
Purpose:
This project is meant to symbolize how people are seen through society’s lens, especially those with privilege. These models have to conform to an image and are judged based on whether or not they fit that image. Society believes in stereotypes and fail to see people as they truly are. Those with privilege are not forced to see the world through a perspective other than their own. They are fine with how the world is because the world is systematically programmed to have them succeed. These models have proved to society that are not afraid to remove their masks and show the world who they truly are. They are saying, “This is who I am, Accept it.” All of these models are students at Cornell University. They have invalidated the slurs through their success.
